In “Cleat Perch Pelipin,” I sought to capture the essence of coastal charm and the resilience of nature through the transformation of a humble bowling pin into a majestic pelican. The repurposed bowling pin serves as a symbolic canvas, bearing witness to the passage of time and the stories it holds.
The process begins with the careful turning of the bowling pin, a metamorphosis that shapes its form into the graceful silhouette of a pelican. Through a combination of carving techniques, the bird’s distinctive features emerge—each detail meticulously crafted to evoke both realism and a touch of whimsy.
Pyrography, the art of using heat to create intricate patterns, lends itself to the pelican’s feathers and beak, adding texture and depth. The dance between fire and wood creates a visual narrative, emphasizing the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the avian subject.
The choice of a shop cleat as the pelican’s roost further anchors the sculpture in a maritime narrative. The cleat, once a functional element in the world of seafaring, now provides a perch for this repurposed avian creature, bridging the gap between industry and nature.
